About Us

An Ancient Faith, A Living Community

St. Mary’s is a parish of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, keeping the faith once delivered to the saints in the heart of Los Angeles.

St. Mary’s Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church is located in Los Angeles, California, where worship services are held every Sunday. Our community gathers to offer the Holy Qurbono and to live out the faith handed down to us through the centuries.

We belong to the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, one of the most ancient Churches of Christendom. According to tradition, the See of Antioch was founded by the Apostle St. Peter, and it was in Antioch that the followers of Christ were first called Christians (Acts 11:26). To this day our worship preserves the Syriac language — the Aramaic dialect spoken by our Lord — in its hymns and prayers.

“In Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.”— Acts 11:26

What We Believe

We confess the faith of the three holy Ecumenical Councils — Nicaea, Constantinople, and Ephesus — and the Nicene Creed as the expression of our common belief. We hold the Holy Scriptures and the Sacred Tradition of the Church, the seven sacraments, and the veneration of the Theotokos, St. Mary the Mother of God, after whom our parish is named.

Our Patroness — St. Mary

Our church is dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary, the Theotokos and ever-blessed Mother of God. We honor her as the first among the saints and seek her intercessions, as the faithful have done from the earliest days of the Church.

A Welcoming Parish
